A tummy tuck is extremely effective in removing unwanted fat and skin from the abdominal area to create a leaner look. A more extensive tummy tuck can also improve the tone of the muscles by restoring those that have become weak or separated (separation is typical of women who have experienced multiple pregnancies). However, if you have man stretchmarks on your stomach and would like to remove them, a tummy tuck might not be your best solution.
Stretchmarks
Stretchmarks, technically known as striae, are caused by a number of reasons, typically dramatic weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, and pregnancy. When the dermal layer of the skin tears, it cannot properly support the layers above with a healthy foundation of collagen and elastin fibres, and this causes a “collapse” that becomes visible on the top layer of the skin. A prominent line forms on the surface, which begins as bluish, reddish or purplish then gradually fades until it becomes pale and silvery. The texture is also different from the surrounding area, making it less noticeable but still detectable.
Stretchmarks cannot be corrected with a tummy tuck, unless they are located in the area where excess skin is to be removed. A portion of the stretchmarks you have may be eliminated, but if you’re looking for a solution for vast areas of your stomach, particularly if located above your belly button, you may need to find a better solution.
Talk to your cosmetic medical professional to find out another more suitable treatment for your stretchmarks. There are many options available, and they are predominately non-surgical. Examples of such procedures mainly utilize advanced laser technology, such as fractional laser skin resurfacing.
To avoid disappointment with the outcome of your tummy tuck, it is imperative you express all of your goals of your procedure. Tell your surgeon everything you’d like to achieve during the initial consultation.
